After a decade, Kalayaan College has built a culture of participation and enthusiasm from its organizations. Last November 30, the school kicked off its Foundation Week celebration which lasted until December 4. Headed by the Kalayaan Student Council, orgs like K.O. (Kalay Otaku), KUJ (Kalayaan Union of Journalists), Unbound, DPAD (Development Program of Arts and Design), the Table Tennis Varsity Team, and the Outdoors Club headlined the Foundation week with their packed activity booths and made the 5-day event possible.

Dr. Virginia Cariño formally opened the event and gushed that she was very happy that “students are active on conducting events”. K.O. sold collectible toys, video games, and members dressed up as anime-characters throughout the week. KUJ manned their yearly radio booth that played requested songs, whether it was hip-hop, rock, or metal. The booth also played KC artists such as Misyonaryo, Tao Aves, and Blue Boy Bites Back. They also announced other booths’ information, activities and conducted interviews with org heads and students. DPAD opened a gaming café at the computer laboratory while selling spaghetti and brownies at their main booth.

The recognition day was held the next day. The president’s list, consisting of students who garnered a 1.45 grade point average or higher, as well as the division’s list students who averaged 1.75 to 1.46 claimed their certificates. The proceedings were presided over by KC President Jose V. Abuava, Dr. Virginia Cariño and Gonzalo Horado.

The Lovers of Doom serenaded those in attendance with two of their cover love songs. Dr. Abueva then told a story about a graduation speech given by a woman who pursued her dreams and graduated despite her old age. He quoted from the speech that “Growing old is compulsory, Growing up is optional”.

After Dr. Abueva’s remarks, the program concluded with the induction ceremony of the elected student council. They promised that they would do their best and Diana Aviado, the student council president spoke of the council’s plans for the future. She spoke of a summer film showing, a proposed Fine Arts week to highlight Kalayaan talent and an upcoming Christmas Party.

Thursday was a good day for food lovers as HRM students cooked chicken barbeque and java rice stuffed with beans and tomatoes. The Outdoors Club served blueberry and Oreo pancakes as well as their special flavored iced tea.  K.O. sold fish crackers and strawberry flavored Kool-aid. For dessert, DPAD sold chocolate cake slices. Dancing to the KUJ’s tunes were Unbound’s arrested students who refused to pay bail.

On Friday, Unbound performed in front of the students on the school grounds.  Headed by Anthony Bohol, the gang displayed their talents, dancing to the beats of the music and the performance was punctuated by Earl Yang’s break dancing skills that heated up the dance floor. K.O. allowed students to play their favorite video games like Tekken 6, Street Fighter IV, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and other titles. The Student council also opened their booth selling the “We love Abuevs” shirt and offered the Org Express program for those who wanted to establish a new organization.

Concluding the festivities, Aviado drew the winner for “The Great Kalayaan Pizza Raffle” won by Don Kevin “Kembo” Udaundo. The prize was a lechon pizza from Pizza Hut as well as a “We love Abuevs” shirt.

“I’d like to thank everyone for making this event possible,” Aviado said in an interview.

“I’m glad the orgs were active and that they were able to gain visibility, members and resources from the foundation week,” she added.
