Coinciding with the start of the 2009-2010 school year, Kalayaan College has officially moved from its former location in Riverbanks, Marikina to Manga Road corner Aurora Boulevard. The move was spurred on by a variety of factors such as an increasing rent and low visibility due to its location.
With a spade tattoo on his arm, you can say that looks can be very deceiving for student council vice-president, Lou Javellana. He’s laid-back, silent to the point of shyness, and often utters one-liners that are more thought-provoking than funny.
He doesn’t seem like the type of man who commands leadership. If Aram Jan Acuna Lascano can interview himself, then he would have been the one doing this. Nevertheless, this 18 year-old Journalism sophomore is one of the more visible student council members, which befits his position of Public Relations Officer. He can be seen around the campus announcing if there are parties to be attended, quiz bees to join, and encouraging, even begging students to join the said activities.
I hate to admit it, but I’ve hardly had any school spirit ever since I entered Kalayaan College back in ’05. I do however try my best to attend as many parties the school organizes. As long as there is a decent amount of alcohol, I’m good to go. Now, one of the many holidays students look forward to is Christmas break. I just love the season and when it comes to my social calendar, I make it a point to attend every Christmas party KC sets up. For the past 4 years, whether it was staying the entire night or just pulling a cameo, I’ve gone to these events. I could care less whether I roll-up in fishnet stockings, 6-inch heels, false eyelashes, with my hair and make-up done and with an outfit that seemed like I was going to a costume party; KC Christmas parties were always a treat to show up to and this year wasn’t any different. A few weeks ago, after pressure from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), Power Balance Australia admitted that there is no credible scientific basis for their claims that the silicone bracelet improves balance, strength and flexibility. Imagine that.
"I think our leaders are not leading us properly. They underestimate the capacity of our citizens to think of the future. They want to dumb down our citizens. They want the citizens to be vulnerable to the idea of control, of patronage. They somehow think that this is above the ordinary citizen.
But nothing is above the ordinary citizen." Making a publication is no easy task and the Kalayaan Union of Journalists official newsletter, Kartilya, is no different.
Last November 27, LeBron James and the Miami Heat were struggling to a 9-win, 8-loss record. This despite the media branding him as the Heat’s supposed saviour, the man who would bring them back the NBA Finals trophy they last won in 2006.
Just down the ramp of the Kalayaan College building, you’d smell the wafting scent of home-cooking.
This is the school canteen, where students and faculty staff members purchase their meals and snacks for sustenance for a day of school. The proprietor of this canteen is made up of a married couple tandem that has a history of serving good food. |
